History of Square Dancing

Square dancing, with its vibrant calls and lively steps, has been a cherished tradition for generations. Rooted in rich cultural history, it has evolved from its European origins to become a uniquely American folk dance. This journey reflects the resilience, creativity, and community spirit of its dancers.

The Roots of Square Dancing

Square dancing has roots in both English and French folk dances. These dances evolved over time, influenced by the cultures that immigrated to America. As settlers moved westward, square dancing spread and adapted to different regional styles.

The Rough Beginnings

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, square dancing gained a reputation for being rowdy. Danced in taverns, the atmosphere was often wild, and dancers were often only familiar with the figures within their own groups. During this time, musicians played instruments like fiddles, guitars, and banjos while dancers relied on callers within each square to announce the figures.

Pioneers of the Dance

Square dancing’s revival began in the 1920s with two key figures: Henry Ford and Dr. Lloyd "Pappy" Shaw. Ford, a lover of square dancing, built a dance hall for his employees and helped popularize the dance in the U.S.

Dr. Shaw, through his extensive research and documentation of dance figures, brought square dancing out of its decline and helped create the foundation for modern square dance. Shaw published "Cowboy Dances" in 1939, laying the groundwork for standardized square dancing figures.

The advent of microphones and turntables revolutionized the experience, enabling a single caller to lead large groups more effectively.

A Dance For Everyone, Everywhere

Today, square dancing is an internationally recognized activity with standardized calls, allowing dancers to participate anywhere—whether in the U.S. or abroad. While the calls may be pronounced with various accents, they remain universally understood in English, making square dancing a unique, global tradition.
